Greetings!

I hope you are well and enjoying the summer.

Recently I had to come up with a title for my new business card and, inspired by Derek Sivers’ TED talk, Leadership Lessons from the Dancing Guy, I chose "1st First Follower." In his talk Derek says, "being a first follower is an underappreciated form of leadership.” When I look back at the development of the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities, and now the Compassion Games: Survival of the Kindest, I can see that this role has played an important part in helping to make a movement.

Inspired by Karen Armstrong and the Charter for Compassion, Seattle became a “First Follower" in that the city was the first to affirm the Charter for Compassion. We extended an invitation to other cities to follow us and now there are over 80 other cities that are part of the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities.

Then, in 2012, inspired by Mayor Greg Fischer and his claim that Lousiville was the most compassionate city in the world, we chose to follow them and took up the community challenge to play the Compassion Games: Survival of the Kindest 9/11 - 9/21. As of this writing, ten other cities - including New York City, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, Louisville, Milwaukee, Houston, Cincinnati, and Gurgaon India - are participating.
